Bayou Magazine is a biannual literary magazine that publishes poetry, fiction, nonfiction and the winner of the annual Tennessee Williams One-Act Play Contest. Our mission is to present exceptional, original writing by both established and emerging writers. UPDATE 2/1/17: 

Update: We are pleased to announce that Bayou Magazine will pay authors for all fiction manuscripts submitted and published after February 1, 2017. Payment for fiction is $50 for published manuscripts of 3000 words or more and $25 for those less than 3000 words.

Note: please read Submission Guidelines carefully. We are unable to refund submission fees for withdrawn manuscripts or manuscripts declined because they do not fit the criteria below.

• All work should be double-spaced, 12 point,Times New Roman.

Submission Guidelines

Limit length to 7,500 words or less. Flash fiction and short-shorts are welcome. Novel excerpts are welcome ONLY IF they can stand alone as short stories. We do not accept gothic, horror, or juvenile fiction.

If you are submitting flash fiction, we will only read ONE SUBMISSION at a time. Any single submission containing more than one flash fiction story will automatically be declined. 

If we decline a submission, we ask that you wait 3 months from the date you receive notice before submitting again. More frequent submissions will be declined.

Students, faculty and alumni of the University of New Orleans are not eligible to submit.

Guidelines
We will consider no more than 5 poems at a time. Only withdraw your poetry submission if you would like to withdraw all poems from consideration. To withdraw specific poems from your submission, add a note through Submittable to your submission listing which poems you'd like to remove from consideration.

After publication in Bayou Magazine, all rights revert to the author. Payment is two contributor’s copies. All work published in Bayou Magazine is considered for Pushcart Prize nominations.

Bayou Magazine accepts images of fine art in all media to feature on our cover, the trim size for which is 6" w x 9" h. 

Image Specifications: 300dpi and a minimum of 1800 pixels wide. Submit up to 5 .tiff or .jpg files that can be reproduced at 1,800 pixels wide.

Submissions that do not meet the specifications will be rejected without review.

Submission period: Sept 1 through May 1.

Current and former UNO students are not eligible to submit.

- Submissions must be original, previously unpublished work of fiction, no longer than 7500 words.

- Reading fee: $20, includes a contest issue.

- You may enter more than one story, but each submission must be uploaded separately with its own entry fee.

- We accept novel excerpts if the submission stands alone as a complete short story.
